an original robot design

Core Idea: Design and model from scratch a robot in 3DS Max
Medium: 3D
Outcome: an original robot design + poster
Year: 2019
Time spent: 2 weeks

Inspiration:
  • Cyborgs, mechas of humanoid forms
  • Gypsy Danger from Pacific Rim
  • Crysis’s Nanosuit
  • Arduin - a character of the same name from the mobile game Arena of Valor
  • My own robot character from ‘Obscure’

Process of the modelling

This was my first time using any 3D software. I learned not too much in terms of quantity, but personally, my worldview has never been the same afterwards. I started seeing the world through meshs and polygons, dissecting form and shapes even off-screen. I felt like a kid again, sculpting clumsily the 3D meshes like the 5-year-old me playing with clay to make dinosaurs.

The clay dinosaurs I made in primary school

I proceeded to render out my creation and studied a bit of virtual set-building in the process.
Hah. Look at those floating feet.

There is something extraordinary about finding a new medium for one’s ideas to come to fruition.
The clumsiness of the beginner. The awe-inducing but slight frustration of your work not looking quite like how you imagined it.
Deciding to leave it as it is or push harder to close the gap of Vision vs. Reality.
