a commisioned creature design

Core Idea: Design a mecha-buffalo concept in 2D
Medium: 2D
Outcome: an original mecha-buffalo design
Year: 2021
Time spent: 4 days

The client was inspired the works of Hajime Sorayama and his ‘superrealism’ illustrations.
They wished for that “chrome-y” look for the material, while the actual details and features have to be robotic, mechanical and sleek.

Having absorbed Sorayama’s aesthetics, I had to know how exactly Nature has designed water buffalos.
Okay. A very big torso, with the head and horns the centerpiece to the species. Shoulders and hips form two slopes like to mountain peaks. Slim legs with hooves, legs have bend at 3 main points.

I liked the horizontality of buffalos’ sides. Water buffalos’ in particular. They have this almost egg-shaped torso.
After sketching briefly on paper, and finding a satisfying blueprint, I moved to the digital realm.

Different horn shapes - each presenting their own presence and a dissimilar energy

their horns grow outward and slightly backwards, and curve in a semicircle but remain on the plane of the forehead. The client, after seeing several different horn designs, chose the second iteration (highlighted in green)

Final 3D designs - done by my colleague to use as T-shirt design

This project felt special because the stars aligned for me.

I was competent at mecha-sci-fi stuff.
I loved mecha-sci-fi stuff too.
And I was paid for it.

Paid for something I was good at and loved doing.
I hope the future holds many more projects like these.
